Tennis Succeeds at District and Boys Win Back-to-Back State Championship
Despite numerous bouts of cold weather, wind, and rain this season, tennis players prevailed at both district and state, with the boys winning the state title for the second consecutive year. Their first state championship occurred just last year.
“Anytime you can be a part of LCS history, it’s a great year,” said Head Coach Vincent Flores. “With wet weather postponing and canceling many matches and practices, this season was an interesting one to navigate.
“With as little court time as we had, it was a great time to peak at just the right time.”
The boys and girls tennis teams entered the district tournament held at All Saints in Fort Worth on March 28-29. Facing top athletes from surrounding schools, the tennis teams emerged with six state qualifying players and the boys 6A district title.
At district, Katherine Marks won first in girls singles, Trey Wells came in first for boys singles, Trevor Vacarro and Ben Ward won first in boys doubles, and Preston Blakeley and Hunter Boyd earned second in boys doubles.
This year marked the first year in TAPPS history that mixed doubles was included as a division. Reed Taber and Isabella Van Trease won first place, and Kate Duininck and Austin Hunt earned third place in this new category, which may become a part of the state contest next year.
Using their victories as momentum, the qualifying players journeyed to Waco for the state competition on April 8-9.
Skilled players from all regions of Texas exemplified their strengths in the competition. With perseverance, Liberty tennis players once again triumphed. Preston Blakeley and Hunter Boyd reached the quarter finals, where they contributed to the total TAPPS points for the boys team. Trey Wells placed second in boys singles, Katherine Marks won second in girls singles, and Trevor Vaccaro and Ben Ward earned the state title for boys doubles for the second year in a row. These victories put the boys team in the lead, which resulted in achieving the title of TAPPS 6A boys overall champions.
